Welcome to the Blackout

“It is said that what is called “the spirit of an age” is something to which one cannot return. That this spirit gradually dissipates is due to the world’s coming to an end. For this reason, although one would like to change today’s world back to the spirit of one hundred years or more ago, it cannot be done. Thus it is important to make the best out of every generation.”

-Tsunetomo Yamamoto

1990s America. A great sink hole opens in the pacific ocean, swallowing miles of sea and anything floating within it.
Shortly after, a foul black miasma launches into the sky, blotting out the sun. Technology goes dark. The country- the world- goes into panic.
A strange radiation set in, causing sickness but not death. After a week, creatures began appearing on the coastline, coming out of that bottomless pit in the ocean. The only words used to describe them, written in now ancient tomes, were demons. They tore through the cities of the west coast making their way across the nation, destroying and corrupting all in their path. A powerless military sent automated soldiers to die. A powerless government left the people to fend for themselves. And fend they did- through drastic efforts, many civilians made their way underground and into dense forests where it seemed the demons would not venture. Now, countless years after the Fall of America, the demonic threat has mostly subsided. The sky is dimmed but not pitch black, and mutated humans have emerged to settle this post-American nightmare. You are among them.

You are a Cartographer, tasked with discovering and mapping survivable locations-
in the Blackout.

Welcome to the Blackout is a tabletop role-playing game

designed for a team of 3 to 5 cartographers, called cartos, to explore, map, and survive a mid-90s post-post-apocalyptic American wasteland.
Game Masters are encouraged to use the provided tools to create a sprawling hex map in which cartos will traverse, find interesting locations, and fight men and monsters all while balancing fatigue, rations, and ammunition.
In Welcome to the Blackout combat is quick and deadly, exploration is rich, and emergent storytelling is king.
